Extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ukrainian Citizens

In response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, has taken the decision to extend the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ukrainian citizens for an additional 18 months. Furthermore, the TPS for Ukraine has been redesigned, which means that Ukrainian nationals (including those without a nationality who last habitually resided in Ukraine) who were residing in the United States as of August 16, 2023, are now eligible for TPS.

Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas has emphasized the necessity of this extension due to Russia’s ongoing military invasion of Ukraine and the resulting humanitarian crisis. This move ensures that the United States continues to provide safety and protection to Ukrainians who may be unable to return to their homeland. The U.S. government remains committed to offering support to Ukrainian nationals through this temporary form of humanitarian relief.

Currently, there are approximately 26,000 individuals benefiting from TPS, and they will retain their TPS status until April 19th, 2025. According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), an estimated 166,700 additional individuals may now be eligible for TPS under the redesignation for Ukraine.
