Citizenship (Naturalization)
You may apply for naturalization to become a US citizen if you are a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for at least five years, or three years if you are the spouse of a US citizen.
You must be an individual of good moral character for at least five years prior to applying and must be willing to take the oath of citizenship.
Generally, you must read, write and speak English and pass a history and government test.
You must have been physically present in the US for at least 50% of the time for the last five or three years, depending on whether you are the spouse of a US citizen or not.
The application is filed and the applicant is interviewed at a USCIS office, and if granted, is sworn in as a citizen before a Federal Judge.
