Can I Work on an F-1 Visa in the US?

An F-1 visa is one of the most common types of student visas for international students looking to study in the United States. Many students wonder if they can work while on an F-1 visa, and the answer is yes, but with restrictions.

On-Campus Employment

F-1 visa holders can work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during holidays and breaks. On-campus jobs can include roles like library assistants, research assistants, or working in dining services. These jobs must directly relate to the institution where the student is enrolled.

Off-Campus Employment

Off-campus work is restricted for F-1 students, but under certain conditions, it can be allowed. After completing one academic year, students may qualify for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT).

CPT is for employment directly related to the student's field of study and requires authorization from both the school and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

OPT is more flexible and can be used for work experience during or after completing your degree, typically lasting up to 12 months (or longer for STEM graduates).

STEM OPT Extension

For students in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) fields, an additional 24-month OPT extension is available. This provides F-1 students with more opportunities to gain practical work experience in the U.S.

Understanding the restrictions and opportunities available to F-1 visa holders can help international students navigate employment options without risking their visa status. Always ensure that work is authorized and in compliance with visa conditions.
